Ömür KINAY - Since 1999, I have been working on an experimental project: I am spending my days riding a wheelchair in an attempt to attract attention to “Being a disabled person in Turkey and Europe.” Is it possible to be creative, independent and disabled at the same time?
I began the international leg of this project in 2005, wherein I had the chance to experience being abroad. After I graduated from the university, I lived in England for a little over one year, and about five months ago, I returned Turkey to do my MA. I travelled to France, Belgium and Scotland while I was in England, whereby my priorities were visiting museums and galleries, watching plays and musicals and attending festivals. And of course, I have done all this with my wheelchair and with my backpack hanging on its back. It was a pleasure to observe that I had no difficulties or bad experiences during my travels.
I would be delighted to have the chance to work with artists from all over the world and to create a work of art that will render such diversity into a form of artistic expression. I believe my strengths in creativity and independence would enable me to create something that is unique and meaningful.
I think having this chance would greatly benefit me and my disability project.
However, there is only one lie in this letter... I wish my disability was really a part of the project.
